Rabies is a disease caused by a virus found in the saliva of infected mammals. It is transmitted to people and pets by bites. The following steps will protect your family and pets from this terrible disease.

1. Vaccinate your pets! Oklahoma has mandated statewide immunization of all dogs, cats and ferrets over 4 months of age. An animal is only considered an official vaccinate if verified by veterinary record. Although over-the counter sales of rabies vaccine are still allowable, vaccines administered by a lay person will not be recognized by state regulations.

2. Don’t attract animals to your home by leaving food out.

3. Keep a tight fitting lid on garbage cans.

4. Keep garage and shed doors closed. Cap all chimneys so animals do not nest in these areas or enter your home.

5. Exclude bats from houses or structures near homes.

6. Avoid contact with wild animals and with stray animals you do not know.

Rabies is an increasing threat to cats. At the present time, the number of reported feline rabies cases in the U.S.A. far exceeds that for all other domestic animals. Rabies is a public health concern because of the potential for human exposure. Vaccination of cats is highly recommended and is required by law in most areas of the country.
