Frequently we hear about conscientious cat owners who cannot afford to spay or neuter their pets. Our hearts go out to these people and to the hundreds of homeless cats that live in the Humane Society’s animal shelter. In association with the Stillwater Humane Society, The Cat Clinic of Stillwater developed a program to help both people and animals!

“Companion Care” allows a cat’s owner to volunteer at the Humane Society to earn the services of our veterinary clinic. This program has four positive results:

  • The volunteers at the Humane Society will see the effect of irresponsible pet ownership and help educate our community

  • The Humane Society will have additional volunteers to help with animal care

  • The cats will get the quality services they need

  • The doctors and the staff of The Cat Clinic will feel good about helping other cat-loving people

Volunteer time cards and a program description are available at the shelter. A Humane Society employee will sign the time card each day a volunteer works. Twenty hours of service are required for an ovariohysterectomy (spay) and ten hours of service for a orchiectomy (neuter). All volunteer hours need to be performed and documented prior to the surgery. The cat must be properly immunized and healthy before surgery. Pre-surgical exams are performed on each patient, and surgery will be postponed if the patient is ill.

The number of procedures performed each year is currently limited to twelve. The estimated cost to the Cat Clinic is $1,500 yearly.

Several people have taken advantage of this program, and we look forward to lending a hand to others.
