Beauty is not in robes or cloaks,
Know this—even if you are draped in finery.
True beauty lies in noble traits,
And virtues passed down, forging glory.
I prepared for harsh days a swift steed,
A tireless mount that outruns the winds.
With a firm lance that slices clean,
Through armor and through flesh alike.
I knew that on such a day,
I’d rise with pride, high as the stars.
My people, when they don their iron,
Become as fierce as tigers, strong and swift.
Each man rushes toward the day of battle,
Armed with whatever he has prepared.
When I saw our women beat the earth,
Marching strong with goats in tow,
Lamīs appeared—radiant,
Like a full moon rising in the sky.
Her beauty, once veiled, now revealed—
And the moment turned solemn and real.
I faced their champion in the field,
For no brave man dodges such a fight.
They sought my blood, but I too swore,
That should I meet them, I would strike.
How many noble brothers I have laid,
With my own hands, into their graves.
Yet never did I panic, never did I cry out,
No tears nor fears could dim my fire.
I wrapped him in his burial shroud,
For I was made, from birth, of iron will.
I sing the song of golden days,
And ready myself for every foe.
The ones I loved have gone before me,
And I remain, like a lone sword—unsheathed.

So take pride, for people toward you are of three kinds:
One who admires, one who envies, and one who is ignorant.

Indeed, you have risen high and no longer care,

Whether the speaker offers praise or blame,
Now that they know who you are.

All enmity may be hoped to turn into friendship,

Beware of What You Write With Your Hand:

The Translation:

What a person posts on their phone, they will find again,
For the servant forgets, but my Lord does not forget.

They will find it written in their record at the resurrection,
Whether it was good or otherwise, their efforts will be in vain.

Until they are rewarded for what they have written,
The Almighty does not forget, far be it from Him.

They will see the records containing everything they wrote,
On the Day of Judgment, in their right hand.

Blessed is the servant whose record is white,
On a day of distress, which turns hair gray at its sight.

The Day of Judgment is a terrifying earthquake,
A day long for the oppressors to weep.

So fear God in what you are publishing,
For the best treasure on the Day of Resurrection is piety.

And beware of oppression, for oppression is destruction,
The worst loser is the one whose Lord opposes them.

Be sincere in your postings, seeking God’s face,
Hoping for safety when you meet Him.

Do not let your concern be the approval of people,
God is sufficient for you as a profit when He is pleased with you.

Follow the path of the Messenger of God,
emulating him, Whom the Lord chose for this religion.

Fear the consequences of what you are publishing,
The truly happy is the one who is saved in the Hereafter.

Then prayers upon the guiding warner,
and On whom the Lord praised in the Quran,

And all his family and companions,
as long as Pure words are spoken by mouths throughout time.

The translation:

And often, when a calamity befalls a person and he feels extremely distressed,
the relief from it comes from God.
When the crisis tightens and its loops become more entangled,
it gets resolved, and I used to think it would never be solved.”

These lines express trust in God and the certainty that relief will come after hardship. The poet, Imam Al-Shafi’i, conveys a message of hope and optimism, encouraging patience and faith that God will alleviate difficulties and resolve problems no matter how tough they seem.

Zuheir ibn Abi Sulma’s Poem

I’m going to translate Zuheir ibn Abi Sulma’s poem into English:

I grew weary of the burdens of life, yet he who lives
Eighty years with no end in sight does not weary you

I know what yesterday and today hold in store
But as for tomorrow, I am ignorant

I’ve seen fate striking at the same person she hits
Ending him, while the one she misses lives on and thrives

And whoever does not craft many things
Will be sharpened with fangs and trodden upon with disdain

Whoever chooses to do good without being respected
Will flee, and whoever does not fear slander will be slandered

And whoever possesses grace yet withholds it
His people will grow self-sufficient without him and reproach him

Whoever fulfills will not be reproached, and whoever guides his heart
To the tranquility of righteousness will not grumble

And whoever fears the causes of death will attain them
Even if he climbs the ladder of heaven with a ladder

Whoever places virtue in those who do not deserve it
Will earn criticism for himself and regret

And whoever disobeys the edges of glass
Will obey the high places, all mounted on disgrace

And whoever does not defend his pool with his weapon
Will be destroyed, and whoever does not oppress people will be oppressed

And whoever alienates himself will consider his friend an enemy
And whoever does not honor himself will not be honored

Whatever traits a person possesses
If they’re true, they’re known to people even if concealed

And like the coffee grinder, you see a mute person
His increase or decrease is in his silence

The tongue of a youth is half, and half is his heart
So nothing remains except the form of flesh and blood

And indeed, after foolishness, there is no patience
And indeed, after foolishness, a youth dreams

We asked, and you gave, and we promised, and you returned
And whoever asks excessively one day will be deprived

A poem By Imam Al-Shafei https://icstillwater.org/poem-by-imam-shafei/ https://icstillwater.org/poem-by-imam-shafei/#respond Mon, 27 May 2024 03:27:12 +0000 https://icstillwater.org/?p=6988

This is a poem by Imam Muhammad bin Idrees al-Shafei. I found it profoundly relevant and decided to share it here with the best translation possible. I hope many will learn from its wisdom.

And here is the translation:

A person is known among people by their deeds,
And the noble qualities of a person reflect their origin.

Be patient with the sweetness and bitterness of time,
And know that God accomplishes His will.

Do not gossip, lest you be gossiped about,
For he who speaks ill of others might be spoken ill of in return.

Avoid obscenity, do not utter it,
Whether in serious talk or in jest.

And if a friend wrongs you out of ignorance,
Forgive for the sake of friendship, not for his sake.

How many an accomplished scholar has been insulted
By one who is not even worth the stitching in his shoe!

The sea has corpses floating on its surface,
While pearls are buried deep in its sands.

Be amazed at a sparrow competing with a hawk,
But only because of its foolishness and lack of sense!

Do not expect to gather sugar from bitter colocynth,
For things return to their origins in taste.

It is written in the skies on the pages of fate:
Whoever does good will be rewarded in kind.

May this poem inspire you to reflect on the virtues of patience, forgiveness, and the enduring nature of good deeds.
